Kim’s Story
Kim and her 3-year old son Jackson lived in Transitional Housing for a little more than 2 years. They moved into the Norwell Home in April of 2006 after living in a homeless shelter for 3 months. “The three longest months of my life,” she said as she recalled those days. She was anxious to find an alternative for Jackson.
As Kim and Jackson moved into the Norwell Home (Phase I), they worked on the adjustments that come with every move. “Jackson was a little withdrawn at first,” she said, “but he adjusted fairly quickly.” While living at the Norwell, Kim took the necessary steps to obtain her G.E.D. in addition to working at McDonalds. She also did a lot of volunteer work. Through it all she battled her own depression. One of the challenges she remembers facing was being consistent with Jackson’s schedule.
Appreciative of the support and resources offered by her case managers, Kim took advantage of the extra programs offered in Phase I. In July of 2007, Kim was ready to move into Phase II of the program, which meant a more independent living situation in one of the Front Door's apartments. Kim and Jackson quickly adjusted to Phase II and loved it. She said it was great there because she always had someone to talk to. While in Transitional Housing she completed her G.E.D. and received certificates in Accounting I and II and QuickBooks I and II. Although it was hard for her at times, Kim said she got more support than one could imagine in both phases of the program
Currently Jackson is in daycare at the Adult Learning Center, “the best ever” said Kim. Kim is working on her resume and hopes to begin taking night classes in accounting, after which she hopes to get a job in banking. Eventually her plan is to move back home to the seacoast.
She recently received a car from the Good News Garage, and shortly after, was approved for housing at Amherst Park. Kim graduated from the Transitional Housing Program in June. Her greatest challenge for the future, as she sees it now, will be to stay focused on what she needs to do. We have no doubt that she can do that and wish her continued success!
